As emu chicks develop, they need larger waterers and feeders along with increased floor space. Separate birds by sex identification and rear them in distinct groups. When required, add sufficient paddy husk to the pen to keep litter in good and dry condition. Provide Yembroos® grower mash to birds until they reach 34 weeks of age or 25 kg body weight. Supply greens at approximately 10% of the diet, particularly various types of leaf meals to help birds adapt to fibrous diets. Maintain availability of clean water constantly and provide feed on an ad libitum basis. Maintain dry litter conditions throughout the grower phase. Add appropriate quantity of paddy husk to the pen whenever necessary. Allocate 40ft x 100 ft space for 40 birds when outdoor space is provided. Flooring must have proper drainage and prevent dampness. Restrain younger birds by securing the body sideways and holding the body firmly. Sub-adults and adults can be restrained by grasping the wing sideways and controlling the bird by holding both wings together, then positioning by dragging closely to the handler’s legs. Never permit birds to kick. Birds can deliver kicks sideways and frontways. Therefore, proper securing and firm handling is crucial to prevent injury to both the bird and handler.
Ostrich requires more spacious facilities for adequate exercise. Floor space requirements of 2-2.5, 3.5-4.0 and 5 square meters per bird are necessary at 4-6, 7-14 and over 14 months of age respectively. Run space is additionally required at 50-400 square meters per bird based on age.
